Exhibition '=' opening at University

An exhibition by Zoe Armstrong, Lynsey Donnachie, Kyle McCallum, Kevin McPhee and Jacqueline Rae opens on April 30 with the following University of Dundee Departments: the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the Department of Philosophy, the Department of English, the School of Architecture, the Department of Psychology and Archives, Records Management and Museum Services.

"As five Third Year Fine Art students, our exhibition will explore the use of other Departments' resources from within the University of Dundee. We will investigate the relationship between text and image, process and outcome and art and language. We believe the title, '=' is appropriate in terms of highlighting our collaboration with S.W.I.G. (Scottish Word and Image Group) because it is simultaneously understood as image and text. Our title also signifies the important results achieved through inter-disciplinary research."

This exhibition is part of the programme for The Eleventh International Scottish Word and Image Group (SWIG) Conference 'Teaching Word and Image', to be held in University of Dundee on May 7th and 8th 2004. The conference will examine the teaching of word and image studies in universities, art schools and other institutions and its influence on the expressive and applied arts.

Artist's Statements:

Zoe Armstrong
I am researching the effect of repetitiveness on human consciousness including repetitive beats in music and repeat patterns. I will be using the resources from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences to research fractals and three-dimensional equations.

Lynsey Donnachie
I am drawing my inspiration from the Philosophy Department, focussing my work on one particular student who is studying the Philosophy of Art. I am interested in juxtaposing visual and mental human qualities and exploring philosophical theories of art in comparison to my own.

Kyle McCallum
I am working with the subject of the mass media and its effect on the workings of society and in particular, aspects of this subject presented at previous S.W.I.G. conferences.

Kevin McPhee
Using the resources of the Archive Services within the University, I will concentrate on the collection of material about Patrick Geddes, botanist, town-planner and remarkable polymath, including postcards Geddes had written to a variety of individuals and also botanical charts held at the University whilst Geddes was working there.

Jaqueline Rae
I am researching the psychological and emotional effects of sport and exercise through the resources of the Psychology Department.
