Dundee Professor appointed leading role
Head of the University of Dundee's Department of Economic Studies, Professor Martin Chalkley, has been
elected President of the Scottish Economic Society. Recognised for his research into the health services and
already a Council member of the society, Martin will officially start his new post in April 2005. Until then
he will take on the role of 'President Elect', deputising for the current President, Professor Elliott at key
events throughout the year.
The society aims to raise the international profile of teaching and research in economics in Scotland and as
part of its activities recently welcomed Professor Sushil Wadhwani, a former Member of the Monetary Policy
Committee, to deliver a lecture concerning the impact on Scotland of global economic recovery.
Professor Chalkley explains, "It is a real honour to be elected to this position. The Society will continue
in its goal of raising awareness of Scottish economic issues on the international platform and in particular
highlighting economic issues that directly affect the Scottish public."
