Professor Annie Anderson from the University of Dundee will be talking to pupils about the work of The Institute of Cardiovascular Research when she visits Longforgan Primary School on Friday, April 26.
The Professor of Food Choice from the University's Centre for Public Health Nutrition Research will be telling the children about the importance of keeping fit and healthy to avoid the dangers of cardiovascular disease, and how TICR at the University is battling against what is the biggest killer in the UK.
She will be passing on tips about what kinds of food can help towards keeping a healthy heart and how regular physical activity should be an important part of daily life.
Professor Anderson said, "We want to get these messages across to children at a young age so they grow up understanding the importance of having a healthy heart."
The children have already been helping TICR reach its £3.5 million target for the building of a research centre by holding a sponsored keep-fit. They will present TICR chairman Robert McLaren with the £480 proceeds of their efforts on Friday morning.
Professor Anderson and Mr McLaren will meet the pupils and head teacher Franca Reid at 9.45 am.
Note to Editors:
The Institute of Cardiovascular Research has been established in Dundee
to create a centre of excellence with the aim of helping to beat heart and
vascular disease. Research is ongoing but £3.5 million is required to
successfully establish a research centre, the building of which is
expected to begin at the University Medical School's Ninewells campus in around 2
years.
Major commitments have already been made from the University of Dundee (£240K) and Scottish Enterprise Tayside (£200K)
The campaign has been running for a year and more than £1/2 million has so far been raised.
