Professor Peter Howie will return from his retirement tomorrow to open the new premises of the School of Nursing and Midwifery in Airlie Place at the University of Dundee.
Professor Howie, who recently retired as Deputy Principal and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology will be accompanied by the Principal Sir Alan Langlands to unveil a plaque in the new centre marking the further integration of nursing education in the University. Nursing education became part of the University of Dundee in 1996.
All nursing school administrators and student services have moved into the buildings on the right of Airlie Place, transforming what was the old Airlie Hall of residence into a new base for the nursing school at the heart of campus.
The nursing school's move to Airlie Place is to bring nursing education to the heart of the University and give student nurses the opportunity to take advantage of student facilities such as the students union and the sports institute which are situated in the City Centre campus.
David Muir, Associate Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery said: "Now that all our student services are in Airlie Place, our students will be spending time on campus and will see what there is on offer. For too long our students have been educated in NHS accommodation and we are now investigating the possibility of conducting some of our teaching in the city centre."
Phase one of the refurbishment has seen numbers 15,13, 11 and 9 Airlie Place transformed into spacious office accommodation for the school executive, research administration and new postgraduate studies. Phases two and three will see the project move down into numbers 7,5 and then 3 to accommodate all administration for the school and the institute for social dimensions of health - a partnership project between the Universities of Dundee and St Andrews.
The University of Dundee is the only University in Scotland which integrates nursing in the medical faculty allowing all health care professionals to learn skills from each other through inter-disciplinary teaching./ENDS
