18 April 2002
Photo opportunity 2pm, Friday 19 April, Department of Accountancy, Perth Road, University of Dundee.
University of Dundee Rector Fred MacAulay will take a trip down memory lane tomorrow when he goes to visit his old lecturer in the accountancy department, Mr Bob Lyon.
Bob is the longest serving full time member of staff in the department and remembers Fred as a student back in 1978. Bob Lyon: "I remember Fred and his mates as students. I met up with him again recently when he became Rector and I invited him to return to his old department to see what has been happening since he left."
Bob will give Fred a tour of the accountancy department showing him his old lecture theatre and the improvements and extensions that have taken place over the years.
Fred will also meet twelve architecture students who are going out to Kenya this summer to take part in the Habitat for Humanity project. The team will travel to Isii, a small town in western Kenya about 50km from lake Victoria which will be their base for eight weeks. They will work as manual labourers constructing two-roomed houses with clay-fired bricks and corrugated tin roofs. For just £7 per day each team member will be provided with water, accommodation on the local church or school floor and food prepared by the people in the village.
The total cost for each person including the building costs is £1700. The team has started fundraising and can be contacted at kenya@architecture.dundee.ac.uk
To round off the day, Fred will hold the Rector's routine surgery in DUSA, where students can bring forward any issues that they would like to be raised at University Court./ENDS
