Students from the School of Town and Regional Planning at the University of Dundee have joined the controversial debate about the western expansion of Dundee.
Third year students were challenged to draw up proposals to accommodate 1000 new houses, community facilities and a major business park in the land north and west of the Swallow Hotel. While some students identified new housing sites in and around villages, such as Liff and Birkhill, other recommended the creation of a single new settlement.
Councillor Robin Presswood, Convenor of the Planning Committee and Mike Galloway, Director of Planning and Transportation at Dundee City Council will visit the University this afternoon to hear presentations from four students and award the best planner the Annual Dundee Civic Award for innovative planning ideas.
Barbara Illsley, Programme Director said: "Our students have gained a Great deal from working with the City Council on a 'live' planning issue. Not only have they developed practical planning skills but they have gained a sense of realism and professionalism from interacting with members of the Planning and Transportation Department".
Kristen Anderson, Matthew Hilton, David Gray and Edward Taylor are the finalists who will be presenting their plans to Council representatives this afternoon.ENDS
