The University of Dundee is marking the retiral of one of its best known members of staff on Tuesday 1 May. Dorothy Dobson, Assistant Director of the Institute of Sport and Exercise took retirement in November last year after 26 years of service to the University.
Dorothy joined the University's department of physical education in 1974, quickly establishing her unique style of teaching and becoming a popular and respected member of staff. She made a significant contribution to the work of the department and is highly regarded within the physical education profession throughout Scottish Universities.
It is in her pioneering work in developing exercise opportunities for the elderly that Dorothy made her most significant contribution. Her work in this field continues to be nationally and internationally recognised and has brought great credit to the University of Dundee. Dorothy's success was duly recognised when she was awarded the MBE in 2000 and Dundee's Citizen of the Year in 1992.
Dorothy said: "I have been exceptionally privileged to work at the University of Dundee. It has opened up countless opportunities for me to develop the over 60s classes and the research that has started on the back of these. I have also loved working on campus and enjoyed teaching students. I am a great admirer of students."
Dorothy's retirement from the University does not signal a welcome break. She will be spending even more time on the over 60s classes, keeping her office in the Bonar Hall and teaching in the Institute. Dorothy Dobson Developments now has more than 60 over 60s exercise classes established all over the country including four in Dundee. ENDS
