16 April 2001
A day of events for the annual meeting of the Graduates' Council at the University of Dundee will be headlined by Helen Bamber OBE who will deliver the Discovery lecture "Discovering what you do not want to find" on Saturday 21 April at 12 noon in the Bonar Hall.
Helen is founder of the Medical Foundation for the care of victims of torture which, since it was established in 1985, has treated some 20,000 victims from over 90 countries. In 1993 Helen was named European Woman of Achievement in recognition of her work with survivors of repression and torture. In January 1997 she was awarded an OBE for her lifelong work to eradicate the practice of torture. The University of Dundee conferred her with an honorary degree in 2000.
The music society at the University of Dundee will be providing the afternoon's entertainment with the annual "Come and Sing" event. Open to the public, participants are invited to attend a rehearsal of The Nelson Mass by Haydn at 3pm and take part in a performance at 6.30pm. This year's "Come and Sing" follows the successful performance of Faure's Requiem last year. Tickets are £5 and are available from Graeme Stevenson in the Chaplaincy centre. All proceeds will go to the Ninewells Cancer Campaign.
The annual meeting of the University's Graduates' Council will hand over the reigns to a new convenor. Jonathan Fitzpatrick, convenor of the Council for the past four years has reached the end of his term of office and will make way for the new convenor Anne Reynolds. Anne graduated in 1987 in English Literature.
The Discovery lecture is free and open to the public. Alumni are then invited to a ticketed civic lunch hosted by the Lord Provost at the City Chambers. For tickets contact the University's Alumni Office 01382 344822.
