'Women at Work in the Textile Industry' - public event
Perthshire's historic Stanley Mills, centre to a major textile industry on the banks of the Tay for 200 years, will be
explored at the latest continuing education event offered by the University of Dundee and Historic Scotland.
'Women at Work in the Textile Industry' is a full day event taking place in the Mills on Saturday October 26th. It will
examine the vital role women played in the life of the Mills, which is one of the best-preserved relics of the Industrial
Revolution of the 18th century.
The day will include a number of talks and interactive workshops covering artefacts and archives as well as an opportunity
to enjoy a tour of Stanley Mills.
The event takes place as part of a working partnership agreement between Continuing Education and Historic Scotland.
The partnership aims to extend the range of learning opportunities to lifelong learners and includes a range of
educational visits to sites of relevance to the Courses for Adults programme.
'Women at Work in the Textile Industry' takes place on Saturday 26th October between 10am and 4pm. The fee of £12
(£10 for concessions) includes entry to Stanley Mills and a light lunch of soup and sandwiches.
Fiona Davidson, Education Officer for Historic Scotland who manage Stanley Mills said, 'We are delighted to be working
with The University of Dundee to offer this fascinating insight into Scotland's industrial heritage.
'The Mills - which also included accommodation and facilities for mill workers - remains remarkably intact to this day
and provides an appropriate backdrop to discuss themes pertinent to the textile industry and the women who worked within it,
shaping Scotland's industrial landscape.'
