Nursing Experience Week

Twelve high school pupils from Fife have been given a week's nursing experience in Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, and Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline as part of a joint NHS Fife/University of Dundee initiative.

The organisations are working together to enable pupils who have shown an interest in a career in nursing to experience the profession first hand. The Nursing Experience Week will see them spend time in a range of different areas to give them a taste of the variety of career choices that nursing offers while providing an insight into the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of nurses.

Fiona Dear, Access and Participation Officer at the University explained, 'This is the third cohort to participate in the Nursing Experience Week which gives pupils the opportunity to explore the challenges and rewards of modern day nursing.

'This is the first time we have had a full programme delivered from the Fife Campus of the School of Nursing & Midwifery and offers the opportunity to enhance our close partnership with NHS Fife.'

Dr Scott McLean, Executive Director of Nursing, NHS Fife, says 'I was delighted to spend some time with the high-school pupils.

'Healthcare in Fife is an integral part of our community and the most striking thing I took from the students was that they felt a pride and confidence at seeing what goes on in our hospitals and community-health settings, many of which they walk by on a daily basis, without ever really knowing what goes on inside them.

The majority of students stated a desire to pursue a career in nursing, which is fabulous. Whether they do, or they do not, we wish them all the very best for their future.'
