Sebastian Conran public lecture - 'Design thinking creating value'
Event - 6pm, Monday April 22nd,
Dalhousie Building
University of Dundee
Innovative British designer Sebastian Conran will talk about his long and illustrious career at a public lecture in Dundee later this month.
Conran's career has ranged from booking the Sex Pistols for their first gig and designing record sleeves for The Clash in the mid seventies to more recent work for clients such as Nissan, Nigella Lawson and John Lewis.
In his lecture he will discuss his approach to a successful career in design, blending insight and experience with manufacturing savvy.
He will also explore how the UK could do better at industrialising it's world-leading innovation. Conran firmly believes this issue can in part be resolved by viewing design as a strategic process of 'making ideas happen', or 'science successful'.
To do this, 'design thinking' needs to be integrated at the very beginning of the innovation journey in order to create value, rather than being used superficially at the end of the process as marketing 'packaging'.
This lecture is the first in a series of joint events hosted by Design In Action - the Arts & Humanities Research Council knowledge exchange hub based at the University of Dundee - and V&A at Dundee. The series aims to enhance the reputation, status and understanding of design in modern day Scotland, underlining its potential for economic growth.
The lecture takes place in the Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, on Monday 22nd April at 6pm. Tickets are free but booking is advised, by phoning 01382 385564 / 385108, via email at events@dundee.ac.uk or online at www.dundee.ac.uk/tickets.

Notes to Editors
Design in Action
Design in Action (DiA) is working to place design at the heart of business in Scotland. We drive innovation by connecting Scottish businesses with academic research and with each other in unexpected ways.
DiA is a £6.4m Knowledge Exchange Hub funded by the Art & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) with the support of a network of business partners and further agency support from Creative Scotland and Scottish Enterprise.
Led from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design at the University of Dundee, DiA's principal academic partners include all of the Scottish colleges of art and design (Edinburgh College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Gray's School of Art and DJCAD), the University of Abertay and the Institute for Capitalising on Creativity at the University of St Andrews.
V&A at Dundee
V&A at Dundee will be the first ever purpose-built design museum to be constructed in the UK outside London. It will provide more than 1700 square metres of gallery space and will be one of the largest dedicated exhibition spaces in Scotland. The galleries will host world-class exhibitions of international design, alongside displays devoted to outstanding Scottish design - historical, contemporary and of the future.
V&A at Dundee is being delivered by Design Dundee Ltd, a ground-breaking partnership between the Victoria and Albert Museum - the world's greatest museum of art and design - and Dundee City Council, the Universities of Dundee and Abertay Dundee, and Scottish Enterprise. The new building is being designed by a team led by architects Kengo Kuma & Associates.
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded it a first round pass of up to £9.2m, including £200,000 development funding, in May 2012. The Scottish Government has committed £15m in capital towards the project's £45million budget. vandaatdundee.com.
