Students' sculpture success
Picture shows (l-r): Sarah Rychtarova, Aaron McCarthy, Alison Scott, and Siobhan Morison.
Students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) have been commissioned to create sculptures for the Woodland Trust, which will go on permanent display at Moncrieffe Hill Wood.
A badger sculpture designed by Level 4 Fine Art student Siobhan Morison won the Moncreiffe Hill Wood Art Commission, while runner-up Sarah Rychtarova has also been commissioned to develop her sculpture of a 'log' book made from wood.
Both sculptures will be installed later this year. Siobhan and Sarah's classmates Aaron McCarthy and Alison Scott were named as submitting proposals of merit in the competition.
The winners were chosen by competition sponsor Colin Perry. The competition, which has been running since 2010, is open to all third-year undergraduates studying on Art & Media programmes.
Mary Modeen, Senior Lecturer at DJCAD, praised the work of the students, saying, "This is a wonderful opportunity for artists to win a commission at an early stage of their career and I am very excited about seeing their work in situ.
"They will work over the summer to produce the sculptures and will have this sited in the woods in early autumn. For the fourth year in a row the wonderful generosity of the Woodland Trust Scotland has provided our students with a commission for a sculpture, and all entrants impressed with the standard of their ideas."
Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust is the UK's leading woodland conservation charity. Over the past three decades, it has acquired more than 1,000 woodland sites, covering over 20,000 hectares, as it seeks to ensure a country rich in native woods and trees enjoyed and valued by everyone
