OBE for Professor Margaret Smith

Professor Margaret Smith, Deputy Principal and Dean of the School of Nursing & Midwifery, has received an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Professor Smith is recognised for her services to healthcare.

Professor Smith joined the University in 2007, having previously been Director of Nursing for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Since that time she has led the School through a period of transformation to where there is now clear vision and direction in place. Additionally, she contributes significantly to both the College and the University in leading strategic planning, research governance and, more recently, in 2012, she was appointed as Deputy Principal for Internationalisation.

She serves on many public bodies and committees, including chairing the working group charged with developing a strategy for Cancer Nursing in Scotland in 2004; acting as Vice Chair of the UK University Trusts Executive Directors Forum; Chair of Modernising Nursing Careers Group (Scotland) and Vice-Chair of Nursing/Midwifery Advisory Forum Scotland.

She continues to support the National Professional Agenda and, in 2008, was appointed by the Chief Nursing Officer to lead the Programme Board for the Modernisation of Nursing in the Community.

She was more recently appointed to be a Panel Member on the RCN Education Commission on Nursing which is being Chaired by Lord Willis of Knaresborough.

"This is a well deserved honour and I am delighted for Margaret," said Professor Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee
