Submission call says 'wish you were here' to postcards

They are often associated with saucy seaside pictures and dutiful meteorological and culinary reviews, but an upcoming exhibition at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) is to celebrate the humble postcard as a distinctive artistic medium in its own right.

Submissions are currently being sought for 6x4", an exploration of artist-designed and artist-manipulated postcards to take place in the next couple of months. Rather than mass-produced commercial postcards that adorn the stands of tourist resorts, the exhibition will be looking at original work created by artists interested in this challenging format.

Images can employ any technique and can be drawings, typography, photographs, or prints. They can be landscape or portrait, address any subject matter, from conceptual to humorous, and can be singular or part of a series. The only stipulation is the image must fit within the standard postcard dimensions.

6x4" is being organised by Nicola Prosser, a fourth year Illustration student and a member of the Student Curatorial Team at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee.

"The point of the exhibition is to celebrate postcards and have a bit of fun with them," she explained. "I was working on a project looking at museum postcards and became interested in the form. Creating a postcard is a very specific challenge as it requires the artists to stick to work with a much smaller canvas than they are used to in order to convey their ideas.

"I was already a member of the Student Curatorial Team and I thought this would be a good subject for an exhibition. 6x4" provides an opportunity to explore the potential of this form through artist-designed or artist-manipulated postcards.

"Artist-designed postcards are small, intimate, unique pieces to be either distributed or collected by individuals. Artists' postcards, however, are not only about creating images on a blank canvas. Artist-manipulated postcards explore the artists' interaction with existing postcards, manipulating imagery by collaging found materials, drawing, painting or cutting into the surface."

Entries to 6x4" can be submitted until 28th January by contacting Nicola on 6x4postcards@gmail.com.
