Professor Rob Duck, Dean of the School of the Environment at the University of Dundee, will next week be rewarded for his sustained commitment to public engagement.

Professor Duck is the winner of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Public Engagement Award for 2012-13. He will receive the award during the CASS Teaching Awards ceremony at the Dalhousie Building on Wednesday, 27th February.

His book, ‘This Shrinking Land: Climate Change and Britain’s Coasts’, attracted substantial public and media attention, and was chosen as ‘Book for the Week’ by Environment Times Online. Through this publication, Professor Duck was able to communicate complex issues relating to coastal erosion and climate change to the public in an accessible manner.

In addition, Professor Duck delivered several public lectures and took part in various media interviews to highlight the findings contained in the book. He led a series of seven evening classes based on each chapter of the book as part of the University’s ‘Courses for Adults’ programme, and participated in several other events designed to allow researchers to engage directly with the public.

Dr Jon Urch, Public Engagement co-ordinator at the University, congratulated Professor Duck on his award, "Professor Duck is very deserving of this award. ‘This Shrinking Land’ has reached diverse audiences and has had wide general appeal and media coverage, anchored solidly in environmental research.

"Not only that, but he is a very accomplished speaker and his engaging lectures have greatly enhanced the knowledge of members of the public. What really marks Professor Duck out is his passion for public engagement. Not only is he an internationally renowned expert in his field but he is fully aware of the vital importance of connecting with a lay audience in order to raise awareness of issues that affect us all."

The College of Arts and Social Sciences brings together seven schools - including the School of the Environment - and the University’s Continuing Education programme, to offer an exciting teaching and research portfolio across a wide range of subjects.

The CASS Teaching Awards 2012-13 will be presented at the Dalhousie Building on Wednesday, 27th February.

The event will comprise presentations by nominees for two awards: Excellence in Teaching and Innovation in Teaching. Each nominee will deliver a short presentation to the audience and judging panel before the winners of both CASS teaching awards are announced and the presentation of the CASS Public Engagement Award takes place.
