‘Seeing the Invisible: Inside the Human Body’ - Café Science on 25th February
A 3-D animation expert from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) will take the audience on a journey inside the human body at the next Café Science event to take place in Dundee.
Dr John McGhee, director of the MSc Animation and Visualisation course at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee, will examine how science and the creative industries are working together to improve clinical imaging techniques and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.
Dr McGhee’s talk, entitled ‘Seeing the Invisible: Inside the Human Body’ takes place at Chambers Coffee House and Restaurant on Monday, 25th February. In it, he will discuss how computer-generated imaging (CGI) technology more commonly used in Hollywood blockbusters can be applied to improve diagnosis and treatment.
Dr McGhee said, "Inside our bodies is a hidden world that most of us never see but doctors and patients are now able to learn and share information about the human body using CGI.
"My work combines the CGI that is used frequently in modern films with data taken from scans of the body, often from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). These techniques combine powerfully to benefit patients, with those who can visualise and understand what’s happening inside their bodies having a more positive outcome."
Dr McGhee is a practising artist, researcher and lecturer currently investigating the application of 3-D computer animation and visualisation techniques in clinical imaging. His research explores the potential for digital 3-D computer-based strategies to engage patients in improved anatomy and disease understanding.
It also investigates the implications of the 3-D CGI artist’s intervention in clinical imaging and has been undertaken in conjunction with the Department of Radiology at Ninewells Hospital.
The popular Café Science series recently celebrated its 5th birthday, with more than 4000 people having taken the opportunity to hear about the ground-breaking scientific research happening locally since 2008.
The popularity of these informal discussions led by leading researchers from the Universities of Dundee and Abertay, James Hutton Institute and across Scotland has helped to enhance public understanding of science, and topics ranging from sea-monsters to the search for E.T. have been covered.
‘Seeing the Invisible: Inside the Human Body’ takes place at Chambers Coffee House and Restaurant at 7pm, Monday 25th February. Entry is free and open to all, and while the event is not ticketed people are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
