Brazilian police visit Scotland on pre-world cup and Olympics mission
Seven senior Brazilian police officers from the State Military Police in Rio de Janeiro are in Scotland this week as part of a fact-finding mission.
As Rio begins its preparations for hosting matches during the World Cup in 2014 and holding the 2016 Olympics, they have come to Scotland to discuss their counterparts' experiences of community policing and the policing of sporting mega events.
The visit, organised by the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR), began with a visit to the Scottish Police College to learn about approaches to police training. They then visited Fife Constabulary for a briefing on the innovative approach taken to community engagement there as well as the opportunity to see community policing in action. The party has also visited the University of St Andrews to hear about research on approaches to violence reduction in Scotland and elsewhere.
The past two days have been spent meeting Strathclyde Police and the Scottish Government Commonwealth Games Security Teams, as well as a research team from SIPR and the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR) who are studying the policing of sporting mega-events such as the World Cup and the Olympics.
The meeting will conclude with a visit to the University of Dundee on Friday to discuss opportunities for collaborative research and postgraduate police education, as well as a visit to Tayside Police HQ.
Professor Nick Fyfe, Director of SIPR, said, "We are delighted to welcome the officers from Brazil to Scotland. They are keen to learn about the approach to community policing in Scotland and about our preparations for the Commonwealth Games given that they will be holding the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. They are also very interested in the way Scotland has built a strong relationship between its universities and the police service around research and education. We are hoping that this visit will provide the foundation for a longer term relationship between Scotland and Brazil."
The Brazilian officers are being accompanied throughout their visit by Peter Wilson, former Chief Constable of Fife Constabulary, and now Director of Scottish Policing International.
The Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR) is a strategic collaboration between 12 of Scotland's universities and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, funded by the Scottish Funding Council, offering a range of opportunities for conducting relevant, applicable research to help the police meet the challenges of the 21st century and for achieving international excellence for policing research in Scotland.
