'Women working in Dundee' - Dundee Arts Café on March 5th

The experiences of working women in Dundee at a time when unprecedented changes to patterns of employment and domestic roles were taking place will be explored at the next Dundee Arts Café event.

Laura Paterson, a postgraduate student from the University of Dundee, will use oral history recollections to examine various aspects of women's work in the city from 1945 to 1970. The talk takes place at The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum on Tuesday, 5th March.

Laura said, "Reminiscences of Dundee in the past will be played, particularly memories of homes, housing conditions, housework and the effect of labour saving devices.

"We will look at the changing experiences for women of paid employment and the social effects for women of the decline of the jute industry. How women's aspirations for their lives changed over time and between different generations is a very interesting part of this story and anyone attending the talk is welcome to share their memories of the period."

Dundee Arts Café is a programme of talks showcasing arts research and developments taking place locally. The series is organised by the Universities of Dundee and Abertay, and Dundee City Council's Leisure & Culture department.

These events enable members of the public to relax and discuss the arts, from English to History, Philosophy to Architecture, and Fine Art to Product Design, with some of the leading names carrying out work in these areas in Dundee.

The events last one hour, and speakers talk passionately about their work for 30 minutes before the floor is opened up to an informal discussion with the audience. All talks take place in The McManus Café, Albert Square, Dundee.

'Stories from the Past: Women working in Dundee' takes place at 6pm on Tuesday, 5th March. This event is free, and open to all. Limited seating means visitors are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
