School of the Environment to welcome school pupils to Winter Lecture

Photo opportunity: 2.10pm on Monday, 9th December at Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill.

The University of Dundee will next week encourage local secondary school pupils to imagine how their city might look in 30 years' time as a result of its current transformation.

As part of its ongoing commitment to public engagement, the University's School of the Environment will host its first Winter Lecture, entitled 'Shaping the natural and built environment: Dundee - a city in transformation', at the Dalhousie Building from 2.10pm on Monday, 9th December

Around 70 senior pupils from Craigie High School, St Pauls Academy, Harris Academy and the High School of Dundee will attend the event. The talk will be presented by Head of Architecture and Planning, Graeme Hutton; Chair in Architecture & Planning, Professor Deborah Peel; and Chair of Physical Geography, John Rowan.

Dean of the School of the Environment Professor Rob Duck said, 'We are delighted to be welcoming school pupils from across our city to celebrate all the exciting developments taking place and what a fantastic place Dundee is to live and study in.

'The lecture will explore the unique setting of our city and how the geographic properties of the Tay Valley have shaped the growth of Dundee. It builds on this to show how the city might look in 30 years' time and asks critical questions as to how we direct and regulate change for the benefit of the people of Dundee and the wider region.'

Pupils will also have the opportunity to meet with staff and current students and learn more about the different projects taking place across the School through a series of exhibitions.

The School of the Environment is an integrated cross-disciplinary School comprising Architecture, Geography, Environmental Science and Town & Regional Planning.

'Shaping the natural and built environment: Dundee - a city in transformation' takes place at the Dalhousie Building from 2.10pm on Monday, 9th December. Admission is only open to pupils and staff from participating schools.
