Christmas Lectures to show how pupils can make a difference through computing

Photo opportunity: 10am on Monday, 16th December at Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, University of Dundee.

School pupils and college students from across Tayside and Fife will next week learn how they can make a difference in a technology industry increasingly dominated by global giants at the annual Christmas Lectures hosted by the University of Dundee's School of Computing.

S5 and S6 pupils will be welcomed to the Dalhousie Building on Monday, 16th December, along with students from Dundee and Angus College. Computing researchers and experts from the University will deliver a programme of short lectures that demonstrate the leading-edge research taking place at the University.

Subjects include an examination of news in the digital age, devices to combat potentially fatal freshwater contaminants, and how technology can help older and disabled people. Undergraduate students will also lead a question-and-answer session to help give the pupils a flavour of what studying computing involves.

It is hoped that this will provide students and teachers with a glimpse of the wide range of research being undertaken in the School of Computing and demonstrate the transformative possibilities of computer technology.

'As always we are delighted to welcome so many pupils to our Christmas Lectures,' said Dr Karen Petrie, one of the event organisers. 'One of the talks this year focuses on how you can make a difference in today's tech world dominated by the likes of Google and Apple, and that is a key feature of all our work.

'We want to get across the message that the individual does have a major role to play in shaping the future of computing and ensuring that the potential of technology is used to help people and groups across the world. The lectures and demonstrations will introduce some of the science and engineering behind computing and hopefully encourage young people to consider studying the subject at University.'

The programme will run from 10am-1pm on Monday, 16th December, with lunch provided for pupils and teachers in the Queen Mother Building afterwards.
