Welcome week 2013 at Dundee

Nearly 3000 new students from around the world will be welcomed to the University of Dundee from this weekend.

Welcome Week 2013 will see events taking place over the course of this weekend and throughout the week to ensure that starting life at Dundee is made as easy as possible for the new arrivals.

There will be an official welcome from Professor Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, in the Caird Hall in City Square at 11am on Monday.

"I am delighted to welcome to Dundee all of our new students, who come from all over Scotland, the UK, Europe and, increasingly, the world," said Professor Downes.

"This week marks the start of a chapter of their lives that will be transformational. They will be exposed to some of the finest minds in their respective fields, begin lifelong friendships, and savour a student experience that has once again been voted the best in Scotland by students themselves."

The University of Dundee was voted number one in Scotland by students in the 2013 Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.

A small army of staff, supported by student volunteers, are set to help the new arrivals settle in as they arrive in the city. New students can also access information through the Welcome Week 2013 website, which has been designed to be easily accessible on mobile phones and tablets to ensure that all information can be read on the move.

Support and information is offered on everything from study preparation and services on campus, to accommodation and local shopping, with a large number of welcome events happening on campus catering to all tastes.

"The arrival of our new students is an exciting time on campus and our students are arriving at an exciting time for the University and the city of Dundee," said Joan Muszynski from the Welcome team. "Students who are arriving this year will be around to see the further development of the city's waterfront and the creation of V & A at Dundee.

"The Welcome team of staff and students are here to make the transition to university as easy as possible for our new arrivals and we will be out and about all week helping them get settled on campus and in the city."
