New designers success for Dundee graduates
Graduates from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design have been celebrating winning prizes at one of the UK's biggest showcase events for rising talent in art and design.
More than 100 DJCAD graduates took part in the series of New Designers exhibitions in London, with their work seen by thousands of trade professionals, potential employers and the media.
Judy Scott, a graduate in Textile Design, was named winner of the New Designers BCFA Scottish Leather Group Award. She won the £ 1000 prize, which also includes a visit to the Scottish Leather Group, after the judges described her and her work as "Natural pattern maker and truly professional. Spontaneous design skill and very distinctive. Creative and highly commercial."
Judy's final-year Degree Show project showcased two clothing collections featuring colourful capes and womanswear.
Meanwhile, Finlay Craig, a Digital Interaction Design graduate was one of the winners of the New Designers Cyber-Duck Associate Prize for his application which can turn any mobile phone into a microphone on the internet.
The judges described it as, "A potentially ground-breaking product which can find application in multiple industries and environments, executed fully and beautifully."
Finlay won a 32GB Nexus 7 tablet.
Three DJCAD students were shortlisted for the Design Council "Future Pioneers" Award, which looks to identify "the most principled, passionate and purposeful young designers." Digital Interaction Design graduate Fiona Harkins was named winner of one of the five prizes.
The prize includes:
- Advice sessions with the British Council on reaching international markets
- Support from Design Council's Design Associates
- Support, mentoring, internships, workspace and personal introductions from the judges
- Exhibition space at 100% Design
- An exhibition in the Design Council reception
- A feature on the Design Council website
- PR and social media support from the design council
In addition to the above prizes, the DJCAD Illustration stand at the New Blood show was also nominated for "Best New Blood Stand."
