Chinese embassy staff to visit University

Representatives of the Chinese Embassy in London will tomorrow visit the University of Dundee to discuss strengthening existing research, learning and teaching links between the University and China.

Ms Yan Li, First Secretary of the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy, and Third Secretary Ms Cai Hong will meet will be welcomed to Dundee by Professor Pete Downes, Principal of the University, on Wednesday, 24th April.

The party will then meet with representatives of the University's four colleges, including Professor Stephen Decent, Vice-Principal of the College of Art, Science and Engineering and Chair of the University China Group, to hear about more than 20 agreements and partnerships with Chinese universities and other institutions that currently exist.

Some of the 300-plus Chinese students studying at Dundee will then meet with Ms Yan and Ms Cai to discuss their experiences studying at the University and living in Dundee. Later Ms Yan and Ms Cai will meet with members of staff from China.

"The growth of higher education in China closely parallels economic growth over the last couple of decades, and this makes it a key partner for the University of Dundee," explained Professor Decent.

"The University now has more than 20 institutional agreements in place with Chinese universities and Dundee's links with China are stronger now than they have ever been. In the past five years, University researchers have co-authored 132 research papers with Chinese researchers in the life sciences, materials science, civil engineering, physics and mathematics, and water resources.

"This visit offers us an excellent opportunity to introduce the University of Dundee to the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy in London and explore with them how we can further develop our relationships."
