'Making Words - Marking Words' - new exhibition showcases residency outputs
Work produced by three artists during a summer residency at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) will be unveiled at a new exhibition at the Cooper Gallery this week.
Making Words - Marking Words is the Cooper Summer Residency 2012 Exhibition and will feature David Bellingham, Cally Spooner and Jesper List Thomsen, who spent the summer as guests of the Centre for Artists' Books (CAB) at DJCAD.
The exhibition will conclude this year's Cooper Summer Residency, and will showcase the outcomes of the residency, which provides a space for artists to reflect upon and experiment with new ideas and strategies that will extend their practice.
A preview evening will take place on Thursday, 20th September, at 5pm, which is open to anyone to attend. Making Words - Marking Words will open to the public the next day.
These three artists share a common focus on artists' books and text-based works.
Cooper Gallery curator Sophia Hao said she was excited to be able to unveil an exhibition from three artists whose work pushed the boundaries of text-based art.
"The Cooper Summer Residency is based on a desire to investigate the means and potential of working in an environment that supports the exchange and sharing of resources and knowledge, and through the Centre for Artists' Books, David, Cally and Jesper have been able to explore their own practice and that of others," she said.
"It also provides audiences with an alternative way to observe, encounter and engage with contemporary art, which in that case focuses on artists' books and other text-based work."
Cally Spooner has completed several ambitious solo projects, including a recent residency at Cite Des Arts Paris. She will perform a reading based on a text written during her residency in Dundee at the preview event.
Jesper List Thomsen, a Danish artist living and working in London who has exhibited internationally, developed several new works over the summer including sculptures from which the audience will be able to read the exhibition.
David Bellingham, who is based in Scotland who has also exhibited widely across the UK and abroad, has devised several textual intervention works, which will be sited in architectural features both within Cooper Gallery and in the approach to it. He has also produced a special limited edition postcard multiple, based on an image taken on Dundee's Perth Road, which will be available at the preview.
The preview evening takes place at the Cooper Gallery from 5-7pm on Thursday, 20th September. The exhibition will be open from Friday 21st September - 10th October (Mon - Fri 9.30am - 5pm, Sat 10.30am - 4.30pm)
