Mapping out our national identity

An exploration of Scottish national identity through its representation on maps will take place at the University of Dundee next week.

Writer and broadcaster Mike Parker will deliver the latest instalment of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society's 'Inspiring People' talks programme at the D'Arcy Thomspon Lecture Theatre on Tuesday, 2nd October.

His presentation, 'On the Map: Cartography and National Identity', will look at how nations choose to portray themselves on maps, and what we can glean from this. There will be a particular emphasis on Scotland at a pivotal time in its history when issues of national identity are under constant scrutiny in the run-up to the 2014 referendum.

Mike Parker is the author of Map Addict and presented BBC Radio 4's On the Map series.

"It's all about the place," he said, explaining his obsession with maps. "My compulsion to explore, to dig deep into the layers of history and identity, began as a lad in the Midlands in the 1970s.

"By the age of six, I was collecting maps. By twelve, I was wandering the country on rail rover tickets and navigating myself to my mum's in Paris."

Mike has worked as a freelance writer since the age of 24, producing his own series of books as well as working with established travel guide companies.

'On the Map: Cartography and National Identity' will take place on Tuesday, 2nd October from 7.30pm at the D'Arcy Thomson Lecture Theatre, Tower Building, University of Dundee.

Tickets cost £8 for adults, and are free for students, under 18s and RSGS members.

The RSGS is an educational charity which promotes an understanding of the natural environment and human societies, and their interactions, making the connections between people, places and the planet, and aiming to inspire positive long-term change.
