Become a dentist at Doors Open Days 2012
Photo opportunity: 12-3pm on Saturday, 22nd September at Dundee Dental Hospital and School, Park Place.
Members of the public will have the chance to find out what pulling teeth is really like when Dundee Dental Hospital and School takes part in Doors Open Days 2012.
The opportunity to see how student dentists practise their skills by using imitation plastic heads and have a go for themselves is one of the highlights of this year's programme, which takes place on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd September.
Fire stations, factories, castles, churches, laboratories, libraries, pubs and pools are just some of the Dundee landmarks that will be participating. Across the city, hundreds of people will be granted access to fascinating buildings not normally open to the public as well as taking part in events, tours and talks for all ages
Doors Open Days in Dundee is organised by the University of Dundee's public outreach team, and several buildings across campus will welcome visitors as part of the programme.
Dr Jon Urch, Public Outreach Coordinator at the University, said Doors Open Days allowed people to learn about some of Dundee's best kept secrets.
"Dundee is a fascinating and historic city, and there are many aspects to the Dundee story that people might not be familiar with, but would be interesting in learning about. Speaking as someone who is not a native Dundonian, Doors Open Days has helped me appreciate my adopted city all the more.
"Here at the University, some of our most exciting buildings will be opening their doors. The public will have the chance to find out about the exciting facets of the University, from world-leading scientific research to the many fascinating items held by our Archive and Museum Services.
"The imposing buildings that make up the College of Life Science's complex are an instantly recognisable feature of the Dundee skyline, but very few Dundonians will ever have stepped foot inside them and seen what goes on in one of Europe's largest and most productive research centres for themselves.
"The D'Arcy Thompson Museum bridges science and history, and I would strongly urge as many people as possible to get along to see the fabulous collection contained there, while we all have the chance to experience life as a dentist for the day.
"From the award-winning Maggies Centre in the west to the historic Claypotts Castle in the east, buildings right across Dundee will be throwing open their doors and letting the public know what goes on there. We have a full and varied programme of participating events and buildings, and I'm sure there is something for everyone to enjoy."
The dozens of events taking place include:
- Claypotts Castle - Junior Tour Guides of Claypotts Castle School, dressed in period costume will take visitors round the 16th century z-plan castle.
- Blackness Road Fire Station - Firefighters will hold dramatic displays while the public get the opportunity to see a working fire station in action.
- Olympia Leisure Centre - The final behind-the-scenes tour will take place before the Olympia closes in 2013.
- Michelin Tyre PLC - tours of the giant plant will reveal the process of making tyres.
- Speedwell Bar - 'Mennies', will be showing off its listed interior and cellar, one of the finest surviving examples of Edwardian pub architecture.
Doors Open Days take place throughout Scotland every September and are part of European Heritage Days. This annual festival celebrates Scotland's buildings, places and spaces, old and new. It is organised locally by groups and individuals around the country and nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust. With the help of many volunteers, these events will open up historic and contemporary buildings that are not normally accessible to the public.
