Clubs rally for charity relay

Photo opportunity: 3.30pm on Wednesday, 19th September at Riverside Sports Ground.

Dundee University Sports Union will tomorrow hold a charity relay when its teams compete against each other to raise money for good causes and promote sport at the University.

The 4x800m race takes place at Riverside Sports Ground from 3.30pm on Wednesday, 19th September. Around 100 students are paying £2 each to take part, while a bucket collection from spectators will help boost the coffers. All money raised will be split between Right to Play, the Sports Union's chosen charity, and the bus fund to allow University teams to travel to matches and competitions.

Vice-President of the Sports Union David Hill said some participants would be taking the event more seriously than others.

"When we held this event last year, some of the teams had a bit of friendly rivalry with others and so were keen to go out for a quick time, whereas others weren't so bothered about personal bests," he said.

"Clubs such as cricket and karate ran the race in their playing kit and we know there are some intending to do it in fancy dress this time around. From a Sports Union perspective, the relay is a great opportunity to bring the entire University sporting community together to have a laugh, get some fitness work in, and raise money."

Right to Play is an international organisation that works with more than 700,000 children in 23 of the world's most impoverished countries to teach them skills such as leadership, teamwork conflict resolution and respect through sport and play.

The Sports Union last week launched its campaign to earn a 'Healthy Body Healthy Mind Award'. This national awards scheme recognises institutions that actively promote sport and exercise as a means of maintaining good mental wellbeing.
