Welcome mat rolled out for international students

Students from around the world will be officially welcomed to the University of Dundee this weekend at an event designed to allow them to learn more about the city and Scottish culture, meet new friends and sample haggis for the first time.

The International Students Welcome takes place at the Dalhousie Building from 3-6pm on Saturday, 6th October. Dozens of students who moved to Dundee last month will be treated to a programme of events organised by the University's College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS).

The 6/8th Boys Brigade Pipe Band will lead the students from Campus Green to the event venue, before Professor Chris Whatley, University Vice Principal and Head of CASS, welcomes the students to Dundee and gives them a short introduction to Scotland and its history.

A number of other presentations, including one on Dundee, past and present, will take place before the haggis is addressed and the students are piped into the foyer to sample local food and drink, enjoy live music and visit the many exhibition stands manned by local groups and organisations.

They will be able to find out more about attractions and venues in the area, find out more about the facilities and opportunities available to them, and obtain discounts with a number of organisations and sports clubs, including Dundee FC.

Professor Whatley said, "We are looking forward to welcoming our new international students and making them feel part of the University community.

"We have an exciting programme lined up to promote Dundee, and help our newest arrivals to discover what a fantastic city this is. They will find out a lot about the heritage and culture of Scotland, make new friends and, I hope, have fun."
