New resident poet to be welcomed to University

Professor Bashabi Fraser, the University of Dundee’s newly appointed Royal Literary Fellow, will meet with students and staff next week when she speaks about her career and reads from her acclaimed canon of work.

Bashabi Fraser is an award-winning Bengali-Scottish poet, children’s writer, translator and editor. She will be introducing her own writing to the University at Dalhousie Building from 10am-12pm on Monday, 12th November.

The first hour of the event will comprise a reading and question-and-answer session, while the second will see Professor Fraser lead a masterclass in poetry writing.

She has had several volumes of her own poetry published in addition to commissioned projects, and has worked in Bangladesh, India, and Mauritius as well as for the BBC. Professor Fraser has taught creative writing and held several residencies and the awards she has won includes the AIO Award for Literary Services in Scotland (2009).

Dr Gail Low, a Senior Lecturer in the University’s English programme, welcomed Professor Fraser to Dundee saying, 'It's brilliant to have a poet such as Bashabi Fraser, who is able to draw on diverse literary traditions and to speak how about how we move between, translate and mediate different cultures in a modern Scotland.

'We are delighted with her appointment, and I am sure she will prove an asset to the University in both academic and creative terms.'

Later that day, author Elizabeth Reeder will read from her new novel, The Freemonts. She will also be in conversation with Kirsty Gunn, Professor of Creative Writing at Dundee, at Dalhousie from 5pm.

Elizabeth Reeder's work has been published widely in literary journals and anthologies, and she has written extensively for radio. She has written two novels, and is Convener of the MLitt in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow.

Attendees will be able to enjoy a glass of wine as Reeder discusses how she created an entire family dynasty and fashioned it into an engaging work of fiction before answering questions about writing and publishing.
