'Drink and Be Merry for Tomorrow We...?' - Cafe Science on 26th November

The safe amount of alcohol to drink will be the subject of the next Cafe Science discussion taking place in Dundee.

The University of Dundee's Professor Graham Ogden, a member of the DrinkAware medical advisory panel, will deliver a pertinent talk on this highly charged subject at Chambers Coffee House on Monday, 26th November. The event is particularly timely as it comes ahead of the Festive period, which is often associated with over-indulgence and its unfortunate consequences.

Instances of drinking-related conditions and social problems caused by alcohol are rising, with diseases such as oral cancer more prevalent in Scotland than in other countries.

Professor Ogden, a specialist in oral surgery and oral medicine within the University's Dental School, said, "Alcohol consumption is something that can impact on our health in many different ways.

"Most people would say that their drinking is safe, but is it always the case? Do we underestimate how much we consume? I'll be looking at the current guidelines and testing whether we're any good at judging what a unit of alcohol actually consists of."

Cafe Science was launched in January 2008, and has attracted more than 3000 people since then. The monthly events are informal discussions led by leading local researchers from the Universities of Dundee and Abertay, James Hutton Institute and Dundee Science Centre that allow members of the public the opportunity to learn more about the ground-breaking science happening locally.

Professor Ogden's talk, 'Drink and Be Merry for Tomorrow We...?' takes place at Chambers, South Tay Street at 7pm on Monday, 26th November, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

Entry is free and open to all, and while the event is not ticketed people are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment. Those who can't make it will be able to follow the discussion via tweets from the @revealsresearch Twitter account.
