Dundee Degree Show 2012, one of the city's cultural highlights and a celebration of the talents of graduands from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) take place later this month.
Around 10,000 visitors are expected to take in the annual exhibition of work produced by final-year students at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee and one of the UK's top art colleges. This year's Degree Show celebrations will begin on Thursday, 17th May and will continue to the 27th May.
Nearly 300 students from all 11 undergraduate programmes will exhibit the fruits of their labours at the show, which takes place throughout the two buildings and fourteen floors that comprise DJCAD with work from some of the UK's best artists and designers exhibited in every spare space.
Professor Tom Inns, Dean of DJCAD, said he was very much looking forward to seeing the finished exhibition.
"Last year was my first Degree Show as Dean, and it was a hugely proud moment for me," he said. "It will be no different for me this year, and I can't wait to see all the thought-provoking and creative works in situ.
"Thousands of people come to see the Degree Show each year, and once more they will be able to view work from some of the UK's top art and design graduates. From what I've seen of this year's graduates, our visitors are in for a real treat."
This year's exhibiting students will use the show as springboard to a career in their chosen discipline, and will be looking to catch the eye of the many employers, funding bodies, gallery owners and other industry figures who will be in attendance.
They will also hope to go on to emulate the success of Luke Fowler, a 2000 Fine Art graduate, who was earlier this week shortlisted for the 2012 Turner Prize. Susan Philipsz, another DJCAD alumnus, won the 2010 award.
A series of lectures by some of the leading figures in the world of art and design will mark the beginning of the Degree Show season on Thursday, 17th May, followed by an Associates Reception for invited guests that evening.
A Preview Evening for students, their families and invited guests will take place on Friday, May 18th before the exhibition opens to the public the following day. Admission is free and the exhibition will remain open until 27th May from 10am until 8pm (Monday - Friday) and 10am to 4pm (Saturday - Sunday).
The annual Degree Show generates an estimated £1.5million for the local economy each year, and is firmly established as a highlight in the city's cultural calendar. This year's exhibition forms part of the Ignite 2012 festival, a 10-day celebration of creativity and culture across Dundee, Angus and Fife.
DJCAD has been rated as the top art school in Scotland and in the top four in the UK according to the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). It is also at the forefront of the 'V&A at Dundee' project that will create a statement building on Dundee's newly developing waterfront. This will house contemporary collections from the world-famous Victoria & Albert Museum alongside other major exhibitions, as well as showcasing design practice and research.
