Graduation a family occasion for Declan and Mairead
Brother and sister Declan and Mairead McElroy will be celebrating together as they both graduate from the University of Dundee today (Wednesday).
The pair, from Strabane in County Tyrone, are both graduating with Law degrees on Wednesday afternoon. The family connection is so strong they even achieved the same result, a 2:2.
Mairead, at 22, is a year younger than her brother but they both started University at the same time after Declan had taken a year out after school to take up a scholarship in the USA.
"Declan had come to visit Dundee the year before I finished school and said it looked great, so we both decided to come," said Mairead. "It was also the only place outside Ireland offering Northern Irish law as a subject, so it was ideal for us.
"It has worked out really well. Obviously knowing someone else takes away a bit of the apprehension of moving somewhere new and starting at university, and ever since we have been able to lean on each other a little bit."
Declan is now set to move to London to take on a new job while Mairead is starting work in County Tyrone.
