Pupils from Cupar’s Bell Baxter High School will get an insight into the world-renowned research taking place in the University of Dundee’s College of Life Sciences on Monday.
The S1 and S6 pupils have been part of a Royal Society-funded partnership between the school and the Division of Molecular Microbiology at the University.
Bell Baxter science teacher Dr Jane Parker and Dr Nicola Stanley-Wall, a researcher in the College of Life Sciences, received funding from the Royal Society for a project that allowed pupils from Bell Baxter High School to conduct exciting research investigating the role of microbes in the process of bioremediation (how rubbish, including paper, is broken down). Pupils participated in hands-on experiments, interactive presentations and formed a Science Club at the school.
Their visit to the College of Life Sciences marks the culmination of the project when the pupils will visit the state-of-the art research facilities and present their own research findings to scientists working in the building.
Dr. Stanley-Wall said, “This has been a very exciting project for the pupils and for the scientists working with them. It is a pleasure to be able to invite these students to a real, internationally-renowned research centre where their work will be presented to the scientists and receive due recognition.
“These pupils are potentially the life scientists of the future; it has been a great privilege to work with them and help to nurture their enthusiasm for the microbiological world.”
