Students to hunt ducks on campus

Photo opportunity: 4pm on Friday, 24th February at Dundee Students Association (DUSA). Duck Day winners will receive their prizes.

The duck-hunting skills of University of Dundee students will be tested this Friday when they compete to win hundreds of prizes, including a round of golf for four, a bicycle service and theatre tickets amongst many others.

Keen-eyed students will be on the lookout for 250 rubber ducks, which have been hidden around campus, during Duck Day 2012 on Friday, 24th February. Each duck they find and return to Dundee University Students Association (DUSA) entitles them to one of the prizes generously donated by local businesses.

The event is organised by The Enterprise Gym (TEG), a University initiative to help students from all degree paths engage with business enterprise and develop entrepreneurial skills. All students who return ducks to DUSA will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about enterprise before finding out what their prize is.

Dozens of companies from Dundee and the surrounding area have offered prizes for the event, including Forbes of Kingennie, Dundee Rep, and Spokes Cycles.

Neil Bowie, Enterprise Educator at TEG, said Duck Day was a fun way to engage with students and get them thinking about the subject.

"When students come to collect their prizes, we'll ask them a few questions to get them thinking about entrepreneurism and entrepreneurs, and how this relates to their own skills and ambitions," he said.

"This day wouldn't be possible without the support of so many local businesses. In seeing the amount of companies involved, and how people have succeeded after taking the decision to embrace entrepreneurism, students will gain an understanding of the possibilities that exist out there.

"We are trying to encourage them to be more self-reliant, and hopefully this event will encourage more of them to engage with the service we offer at The Enterprise Gym."

Since being launched in 2005, TEG has seen continued growth in the number of student participants, events offered, and accolades received. The last academic year saw more than 300 students participate in events, and this number is on course to grow once more in 2011/12.

Weekly workshops, coaching sessions, online resources, and business simulation games offer students many ways of getting involved and learning how to become enterprising.
