DJCAD lecturer features in BBC show

A senior lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) will next week feature on BBC Two ArtWorks Scotland's show to discuss how his, and other, work deals with the issue of missing people.

The episode, entitled 'The Missing', will be screened at 9pm on Monday, 6th February. It will show extracts from Graham Fagen's Missing, a moving-image piece currently being exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, as well as interviews with the artist and footage examining the research process he went through in creating it.

The programme considers the impact on the lives of friends and family when loved ones disappear. Last year, Graham was commissioned by the National Galleries of Scotland to create his video work on the subject, which will remain on display until the end of March.

The writer Andrew O'Hagan, who wrote the novel 'The Missing' and subsequently adapted it into a play of the same name, will also be featured in the BBC Two show.

Graham said creating the piece was and extremely difficult process.

'I thought my experience as the War Artist for Kosovo would help me deal with such a difficult subject area," he said. "However, nothing could prepare me for the stories of the missing, the uncertainty of not knowing and the hope that one day they may return.'

Graham works with PhD, Master of Fine Art and final year undergraduate students at DJCAD. He describes his research and practice as an enquiry into cultural formers, exploring what shapes our culture and how this, in turn, shapes out relationship with other cultures.

He works in a variety of mediums including video, installation, sculpture, photography and text, and has exhibited at prestigious shows across the world.

'The Missing' will be shown on BBC Two at 9pm on Monday, 6th February.
