A Textile Design graduate from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) has won the Graduate Showcase prize at The Festival of Quilts.

Sarah Stewart, who received her degree earlier this year, took the prize at the Festival, the largest of its kind in Europe. She won £1000 to spend on materials for her entry, which was taken from her Degree Show. The entry included pieces of hand dyed, printed and embroidered material, which are intended to be used for fashion design.

Sarah (21), originally from Kirkcaldy, is soon to start studying Business at the Adam Smith College in Kirkcaldy and is hoping to develop her own interior textile business.

"I'm absolutely delighted with this award," she said. "I intend to continue my work, focusing this time on interior design. I intend to spend the prize money on renting a studio space."

"The entry for the show involved designing fabric to be used for fashion design. I concentrated mainly on individual fashion inspired by plants and animals found in the woods. I think that the way we dress gives us a sense of identity and this has always been important to me. However, the response from the public from the exhibitions I have attended has shown me that my designs are more suitable for interiors."

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Festival of Quilts. The show, which took place at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, comprises around 1,000 competition quilts on display, galleries from leading international quilt artists and groups, over 200 exhibitors selling specialist patchwork and quilting supplies, plus hundreds of masterclasses, workshops and lectures.

The Graduate Showcase prize saw ten recent graduates from across the UK exhibit their work after being selected from another exhibition, New Designers, in London earlier this year. Sarah's entry was judged the best of the graduates in the graduate showcase.
