Oil & Gas Law - is it too late to learn the lessons of the past?

Dundee University Press has released a second edition of the bestselling 'Oil and Gas - Current Practice and Emerging Trends', which explores the future of the UK oil industry.

The United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS) is now routinely described as mature. It is no longer a new frontier of oil and gas exploration, but it remains to be seen how steep its decline will be.

Many commentators have assumed that, due to this decline, the effect of the law on oil and gas operations has little bearing. However, this book illustrates how the maturity of the UKCS actually introduces new problems and challenges.

Featuring new and modified chapters written by specially commissioned experts in their field, it explores how these issues has allowed the industry and government to learn from mistakes and accumulate experience, with the result that the legal and regulatory framework now in place on the UKCS can justifiably claim to be one of the most advanced anywhere in the world.

Jacquelynn F Craw, Legal Manager, Director and Company Secretary for Talisman Energy, UK Limited and one of the book's authors said it was an invaluable tool in setting out where the industry is and the legal challenges that lie ahead.

'If we are to meet the challenges ahead, we must pass on the knowledge we already have to a new generation of lawyers,' she said. 'This book helps enormously in that task.'

In a period where oil prices are inexorably rising, there seems to be only one certainty - that there will be an enormous impact on the oil and gas sector.

With such an emphasis on legalities and regulations in this field, it is perhaps surprising that until this book’s first edition (2007), there were virtually no comprehensive secondary texts to address, analyse and evaluate the current practice and emerging trends in the industry.

The hugely successful first edition of this text became an established source of reference for all those engaged in the sector; from student to academic; from oil and gas practitioner to qualified lawyer. As a new generation of oil and gas lawyers prepare to meet the challenges ahead, the second edition accurately details the dilemmas and initiatives of the industry.

Constituting a single, consolidated volume that is both accessible and informative, this newly updated text captures with great clarity this complex and sophisticated area of law, bringing together the expertise of academics and practising lawyers to consider the key regulatory and contractual dimensions of the mature hydrocarbon province.

Oil and Gas Law - Current Practice and Emerging Trends (ISBN: 9781845861018) 680pp is edited by Greg Gordon, John Paterson and Emre Usenmez (all University of Aberdeen). It is published by Dundee University Press, priced £95.00.
