Prestigious prize for Dundee engineer
Dr Yong Sung Park of the University of Dundee's Division of Civil Engineering has won the prestigious 2011 Young Persons' Paper Competition.
Organised by the UK Section of the International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), the competition is open to all young scientists, engineers and practitioners working on novel applications of hydraulics.
Dr Park’s winning paper 'On the origin of the eddy behind a reflected solitary wave at a vertical wall' was presented alongside those of other short-listed candidates at the IAHR-UK Technical meeting in Exeter earlier this month.
He was presented with his prize at the meeting, and Dr Park said he was delighted to be chosen as the 2011 winner of the prize.
'Being new to the UK system, I am very happy to have the opportunity to meet with as many UK-based people from both academia and industry working with hydraulics as possible,' he said. 'I hope this prize leads to constructive collaborations with them.'
Dr Park joined the University of Dundee from Cornell University, USA in April 2011 as a Newton International Fellow. The appointment was made under the highly competitive scheme run jointly by The Royal Society of London and the British Academy to select the very best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world and enable them to work at UK research institutions.
Professor Peter Davies, from the Division of Civil Engineering, congratulated Dr Park on his award, saying, 'Yong Sung is a very talented young researcher who has made a great impact since joining the Division. We are delighted that his work has been recognised by IAHR.'
