New Café Science season opens with discussion about exercise and training
Photo opportunity: 5.30pm on Wednesday, 14th September at Dundee Science Centre, Greenmarket.
It’s not how long you exercise for, but how effective your training is - that's the message contained in the opening Café Science event of the new season.
The monthly events are informal discussions led by leading local researchers that allow members of the public the opportunity to learn more about the ground-breaking science happening in Dundee.
Dr John Babraj from the University of Abertay Dundee will mark the start of a new series when he discusses ‘Energy and Training Wednesday - When More is Less' at Dundee Science Centre at 6pm on Wednesday, 14th September.
He will reveal the results of his team’s research, which show that between just six and 15 minutes of exercise a fortnight can keep you healthy and improve your exercise performance. This talk will introduce a programme that requires only a short amount of time to produce a dramatic improvement in exercise performance and bring about the health benefits associated with traditional exercise.
Dr Jon Urch, Public Engagement Co-ordinator at the University of Dundee and event organiser, said, 'Café Science returns this autumn and will hit the ground running with our first discussion.
'I'm as interested as anyone in finding out how short bursts of exercise might be just as good for you as long periods of training. If you’d like to know more about local science then Café Science is for you. Half of each event is dedicated to your chance to put your questions to the speaker.'
Doors open at 5.30pm. Seating is limited so attendees should arrive early. Refreshments and snacks will be served, and entry is free and open to all.
Café Science was launched in January 2008, and has attracted more than 2500 visitors since then.
