'Portraits for the Future' - V&A at Dundee Masterclass with Calum Colvin
Internationally renowned artist Professor Calum Colvin will host the first in a series of V&A at Dundee masterclasses next month.
The 'Portraits for the Future' masterclass is part of the events taking place around the exhibition 'Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration' which is currently showing at The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum.
Aimed at professionals working in the Creative Industries, the 3-day workshop will use the Cecil Beaton exhibition as a platform for debate and inspiration, examining how portraiture has been captured and developed since the original photographs were taken.
The masterclass is supported by Calumet, the UK’s leading supplier of digital photographic equipment, who are offering the rare opportunity to work with state-of-the-art Hasselblad digital technology, on loan for the duration of the masterclass.
Calum Colvin is Professor of Fine Art Photography at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, part of the University of Dundee. He has achieved international recognition for his innovative approach to portraiture over the last decade and he is acknowledged as a leader in his field of digital photography. Using the individual's heritage as a starting point for conceptualising imagery that tells their story, Calum builds a portrait using objects and perspective to give an image that embraces the individual’s unique personality.
His innovative approach to photography will form the basis of the masterclass which will use humour, advanced photographic technology and lighting to experiment and create future portraits for the digital age.
'I welcome the opportunity of working with a class towards the creating of a portrait-based artwork which reflects on elements of Dundee's cultural heritage from the apposite environment of The McManus,' said Calum.
The masterclass takes place from November 23rd to 25th in the Creative Learning Suite at the McManus. There are six places each costing £125.
The event is the first in an ongoing series of V&A at Dundee masterclasses concerned with design-led innovation.
As an introduction to both his work and the Masterclass, Calum will deliver a public lecture about his innovative and intriguing approach to portraiture on Tuesday 22nd November in the Dalhousie Building at the University of Dundee.
Calum’s talk will be an autobiographical journey, describing some of the narratives and thought processes in his work, which has consistently referred to Scotland and its heritage. Describing his early influences, which include the photographer Cecil Beaton, and the use of portraiture as the central focus in his work over the last 30 years, the lecture offers a rare opportunity to hear how his visually exciting and humorous works are created.
The lecture takes place at 6pm on November 22nd.
The following day, Wednesday November 23rd offers an exclusive opportunity to hear Calum Colvin and V&A exhibition curator Susanna Brown give a gallery talk at The McManus, where they will discuss the development of photographic portraiture over the past century, from Beaton’s royal portraits to experimental contemporary images.
The gallery takes place at 11am. Admission is free but places are limited and must be booked - contact The McManus on 01382 307200.
'Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration' runs at The McManus until January 8th. Featuring images from the V&A’s Beaton archive, it shows The Queen in her roles as princess, monarch and mother.
It is the first in a series of partnership projects between The McManus and the V&A, as part of the pre-opening programme for the V&A at Dundee.

The V&A at Dundee is being delivered by Design Dundee Ltd, a ground-breaking partnership between the Victoria and Albert Museum - the world’s greatest museum of art and design - and Dundee City Council, the Universities of Dundee and Abertay Dundee, and Scottish Enterprise.
Earlier this year the Scottish Government announced it would provide total capital funding of £3.5 million in 2010/11 and 2011/12 towards the V&A project, with total revenue funding (to cover project running costs) of £1.28 million allocated in 2010/11 and 2011/12. The revenue funding supports staffing, marketing and fundraising for the project, and the development of what goes on inside the building - including the exhibitions that will run before the building is completed.
