Dundee students help represent Scotland at Venice Biennale

Three graduating students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design will spend the next two months helping to represent Scotland at one of the world’s most prestigious art exhibitions.

Claudia de la Pena, Hannah Imlach and Holly Knox Yeoman flew out to Italy on Friday and will act as Information Assistants at the Venice Biennale 2011. Their final year works at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee, have been exhibited at the Dundee Degree Show over the past nine days.

Turner Prize-nominated Glasgow artist Karla Black will head the Scottish delegation in Venice this year. Claudia, Hannah and Holly will use social media platforms to post creative visual material and texts, cover daily activities in Venice and record their responses to the art and art-related activities they see and participate in.

Professor Tracy Mackenna, Chair of Contemporary Art Practice at DJCAD, said the three assistants had a fantastic opportunity and will learn a great deal during their time in Venice.

'Claudia, Hannah and Holly will be actively immersed in world-class level contemporary art,' she said. 'Through this unique opportunity they will use their DJCAD training to represent Scotland’s artist Karla Black, and to position themselves as emerging talents in the professional art world.'

Claudia and Hannah will graduate from the Fine Art programme at DJCAD this summer, while Holly is an Art, Philosophy and Contemporary Practice graduand. The trio will stay in Venice until 29th July.

Scotland+Venice is a partnership between Creative Scotland, National Galleries of Scotland and British Council Scotland.
