Dundee Degree Show 2011 - last chance to visit

More than 10,000 visitors are expected to have taken in this year’s Dundee Degree Show by the time the exhibition comes to the end of its run this Sunday.

Nearly 300 graduands from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design have been showing their final year work at the city’s largest exhibition of art and design. More than 7,000 art lovers, industry representatives, and students and their family and friends visited the Degree Show between the Associates Night & Reception last Thursday and Monday evening.

An average of 50 people have been crossing the doors of DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee, to view the exhibition each hour it has been open since then, and with the usual final weekend bulge expected, it is anticipated the 10,000 barrier will comfortably be broken at some point in the next couple of days.

That number has been bolstered by several group visits as schools, community groups and other organisations from throughout Dundee and the surrounding area have flocked to the Perth Road art college.

'It is fantastic to see that so many people have continued to come here and we are delighted to welcome them to the Degree Show,' said Professor Tom Inns, Dean of DJCAD.

'The feedback we have received from our visitors is that they are really enjoying their visit and we hope they continue to engage with the programme of exhibitions and other events we host.

'Anyone who has not been to see the exhibition yet really should do so this weekend - this is a vintage year for the Dundee Degree Show and they will be treated to some wonderfully creative and thought-provoking work across a number of disciplines.'

The two buildings and fourteen floors that comprise DJCAD have thronged with visitors keen to view final year projects from students on all 11 undergraduate programmes.

Among the highlights of this year’s Degree Show are:

  • Lorri Smyth’s colourful furniture made using materials salvaged from Dundee worksites.
  • Holly Keasy’s reflections on Dundee’s aquatic past and future.
  • Blair Fraser’s harnessing of technology to bring people closer to God.

The exhibition will be open to the public until Sunday, May 29th. Admission is free and the exhibition is open from 10am until 8pm (Monday - Friday) and 10am to 4pm (Saturday - Sunday).

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has been rated as the top art school in Scotland and in the top four in the UK according to the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

DJCAD is at the forefront of the 'V&A at Dundee' project that will create a statement building on Dundee's newly developing waterfront. This will house contemporary collections from the world-famous Victoria & Albert Museum alongside other major exhibitions, as well as showcasing design practice and research.

The Dundee Degree Show is estimated to generate around £1.5million for the local economy each year.
