Check out computing research at open evening
Visitors to the University of Dundee will have the chance to try out the latest computing research projects during an open evening to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week.
The School of Computing will be opening its doors to the public on Thursday, 17th March for an entertaining and informative insight into the world of computing research. Researchers will be on hand to talk about their work, demonstrate the value of their research, and encourage visitors try the projects out for themselves.
Dr Nick Hine will be giving a special talk entitled 'Computing the Quality of Columbian Coffee'. Using computer modelling, "business intelligence" techniques can be applied to the production of coffee. These techniques can inform farmers and coffee buyers about measures that can be taken to improve the quality of the coffee, season by season.
Event organiser Dr Karen Petrie said this will act as an introduction to computer modelling, and to show how it can help solve real world problems.
'The School of Computing is excited to be able to showcase the breadth of research taking place here,' she said. “The open evening allows us to demonstrate the work we do here and has become an annual event.
'Last year we showcased our research in Computer Games, and this year we focus on Business Intelligence. It shows how subjects like ecology, geography and economics all come to play in the schools Computing Research.'
The open evening to mark national Science and Engineering Week takes place at the Queen Mother Building, University of Dundee, from 6.30pm on Thursday, 17th March. Dr Hine’s talk takes place at 7.15pm.
Children are encouraged to attend, but under-16’s must be accompanied by an adult. Further information is available by contacting Karen Petrie on karenpetrie@computing.dundee.ac.uk.
