DJCAD student features in international anthology
A Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design student will feature alongside other international artists in a major new anthology exploring the male figure in art.
Tim Sandys (36), originally from Glasgow, is a Year 3 Fine Art student at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee.
Author Eric Gibbons contacted the artist out of the blue several months ago to seek permission to include his work in the new book, ‘100 Artists of the Male Figure: A Contemporary Anthology of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpturep'.
The book features nearly 400 individual artworks featuring the male figure in a variety of styles and media. Alongside Tim’s contributions are works by artists from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas.
Billed as an ideal resource for students, artists, curators, dealer and collectors, '100 Artists of the Male Figure’ showcases works by male and female artists from around the world that focus on this classic subject, whether through painting, drawings or sculptures.
'It's fair to say I was surprised to hear from the author,' Tim said. 'The paintings were completed in 2006, before I came to college and before I had the advantage of the structure and facilities of art school. As I was working by myself at the time, it’s my body that features in these works. They are not self-portraits, as such, but rather I was using my body as a starting point to depict a human form. I had no model to work from other than myself.
'It's been six or seven months now since Eric first got in touch after seeing my website. My site features a lot of work, as well as writings on art. He has written a series of these books, and was looking for representations of the male figure in contemporary art.
'Traditional images, particularly the nude, tend to favour the female form so I suspect this book is intended as a modern take for those out there who include the male form in their work. I find myself working across platforms but it was specifically my paintings he was interested in.
'Some of the paintings I included in my entrance portfolio for University have been selected for this publication. The author as good as plucked me from the ether and asked if my work could be included in this compilation. It seems odd to be included in any book at this stage in my career but I’m not complaining.'
Eric Gibbons studied art in the US and Japan, and has exhibited around the world. He is the resident artist and owner of the Firehouse Gallery in Bordentown, New Jersey.
'100 Artists of the Male Figure' examines the fact that images of the classical female figure are more prevalent in the contemporary figurative art world, as the nude male has been shunned as too potent or treated as a sex symbol. Each featured artist’s approach to the male figure is explained through candid personal statements.
The 256-page, 8.5'x11', hardcover book features 374 colour images and is published by Schiffer Publishing. It will be available in the UK through major and specialist book retailers in the next few weeks.
