Strathmore Trophy 2011

Photo opportunity: 1.50pm on Tuesday, 21st June at pm at D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre, University of Dundee. Prize presentation and demonstration of winning designs.

School pupils from Tayside, Fife and Clackmannanshire will next week compete in the annual Strathmore Trophy challenge at the University of Dundee.

The event, which takes place at the Queen Mother Building on Tuesday, 21st June from 10am, will see 17 school teams from the S1 and S2 age group compete against each other in a challenge set by staff at the University’s School of Computing.

This year’s challenge is to create a virtual tour of the QMB, by creating a blog post about each room. To do this, the pupils will have access to video cameras and other recording devices.

The trophy and other prizes will be presented at the D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre at 1.50pm.

The School of Computing’s Mark Zarb, who along with his colleague Mark Snaith organised the event, said the response to this year’s competition had been good and that everyone was looking forward to the event.

'The Strathmore Trophy is a great event for the pupils because it allows them to have hands-on experience of real computing outside the classroom,' he said.

'We think this year's competition is one of the most exciting; not only will the competitors be using the latest technologies, but they will also be visiting different areas of the department, and engaging with research staff.

'This gives them an opportunity to learn about the varied research we do here at the School of Computing, as well as offering them a valuable insight into the future of computing. The websites they create will remain active for years to come, which will create a legacy both for the department, and also for their schools.'

The Strathmore Trophy competition, now in its fourteenth year, is held annually by the School of Computing to get local school pupils thinking about applications of computer technology to help people.
