Student radio station to set sail on 'maiden voyage'

Discover Radio, Dundee University Students Association’s first ever radio station, is make its inaugural live broadcast to the student body this week.

After almost a year of hard work and planning, the student-led station will be launched at DUSA’s Liar Bar from 10pm on Tuesday, 12 October. Listeners will be able to access the broadcast via the website www.discoverradio.org and also on the radio section of iTunes.

All students are invited to attend the launch, an occasion that the DUSA executive is calling 'one of the events of the year.'

Sam Gray (20), Discover Radio station manager and a Life Sciences student, said he was both excited and nervous ahead of the launch.

'The only experience of being on the radio I’ve had is calling a local phone-in, so I’m a bit apprehensive about being on the air,' he explained.

'Last year we came up with an idea for a radio station that would give an insight into student life at the university and help bring students and the wider community closer together.

'We’re excited that we’re now able to provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the media industry. There has been a great deal of interest in Discover Radio and only last month we held a meeting where over 100 people attended - we never expected it to be so popular!'

Discover Radio has been funded by DUSA, as part of a drive to make student media in Dundee one of the best in Scotland.

Vice President of Communications Natalie Coupar explained, 'Sam and the Discover Radio team have worked all summer on getting this station off the ground. It is due to their hard work and determination that we are proud to host the launch on Tuesday.'

'DUSA is committed to providing opportunities for students regardless of their experience. Discover Radio really is a shining example of how our members come together and create something that is innovative, passionate and positive.'

Discover Radio is run solely by students, many of whom have never been on radio before.
