'Skint' open audition offers chance to star on screen

The student soap opera that counts Hollywood star Brian Cox among its past cast members is to hold open auditions for budding actors and other creative types hoping to take the first steps towards the big time.

Brian is Rector of Dundee University, and his appearance in ‘Skint’, the Dundee University Students Association (DUSA) production which has attracted more than 50,000 viewers in its first six months, helped boost its profile.

He played a rogue bio-scientist, and other big names are being lined up to guest star in Skint. Undiscovered talent with drama coursing through their veins can join them onscreen, regardless of whether they have any previous acting experience or not, by auditioning to appear in Skint’s third episode next month.

Brian Cox is not the only big name that students will have the chance to star alongside, with television presenter Lorraine Kelly, herself a former Rector of the University, lined up for the show. Determined to rebel against her wholesome image, Lorraine has agreed to take part - provided she gets to play a ‘baddie’ in the show!

'Nasty' Lorraine said, 'I'm delighted to have been asked to take part in Skint and to have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the legend that is Brian Cox. I'm really looking forward to chewing up the scenery as a real baddie!'

Even if performing in front of the camera isn’t for you, the Skint production team would still like to hear from up-and-coming costume designers, musicians, graphic designers, event managers and PR people as it expands its remit to include students from universities and colleges across Scotland.

Creator and star Jordan Dunbar said the project was growing all the time and he had ambitions of it becoming the most successful student media project in the UK.

'I've had emails from people across Britain and even Europe asking how they can get involved,' he explained. 'Skint has really caught people's imaginations, which is fantastic as we did it with little or no funding, and built it up from nothing.

'We’re very grateful to Brian Cox for agreeing to appear. I’m sure his performance entertained everyone who saw the episode and it was something of a coup to have him take part. We’re currently speaking to several other big name stars who’re keen to appear in Skint, but I can’t say too much about that until it’s confirmed.

'It’s a really exciting project to be involved in and is getting bigger all the time, with colleges and universities from across Scotland getting involved in making the third episode this autumn.'

The team are hoping to use Skint as a showcase for talent across Scotland, with fashion designers, media students, writers, bands and even hair and make up departments from other institutions getting involved.

Open auditions will be held at DUSA from 1pm on Saturday, October 9th, and Jordan says he hopes as many people as possible with come along to enable them to cast more young talent in the popular soap.

He continued, 'The show is a great way to bring together undiscovered talent in the country. We need costumes, music, posters, publicity, event management as well as actors so we are hoping to get as many young people involved as possible and use Skint as a way to harness all these skills.

'Come along and have a try. We have lots of parts for people and hopefully we can unearth some gems. It’s a great opporutnity to be in the same show as an Emmy award winning actor, you don't get that chance everyday!'
