Coaching forum to inform coaches of best practice

Photo opportunity: 6.30pm on Tuesday, 23rd November at the Institute of Sport and Exercise, University of Dundee.

Sports coaches from University of Dundee teams will gather tomorrow night to discuss how, by raising their own game, they can improve the performance of their athletes.

More than 20 coaches, representing 17 different sports, will gather at the University’s Institute of Sport and Exercise from 6.30pm on Tuesday, 23rd November, for the first Coaching Forum to be organised by Dundee University Sport. This is a partnership between ISE and Dundee University Sports Union established to provide a single infrastructure for the development and delivery of sport at the University.

The Coaching Forum is designed to provide an opportunity for coaches to share ideas and experiences, consider best coaching practice, and identify ways of improving their coaching performance with student athletes.

The Forum will hear from Paul Martin, captain of the University’s successful Men’s Hockey Club, about what student athletes are looking for from their coaches. Fiona Booth, coach to the University Netball Club, will share her experiences from over 25 years coaching in the student environment.

Sportscotland Coach and Volunteer Development Manager, Derek Welch, will inform those present about resources and support that exists for coach development through the regional coaching and volunteering infrastructure.

With teams from Dundee University enjoying success at all levels this year, it is hoped that the Coaching Forum will provide support and encouragement to the coaching workforce that is an integral part of club and team success within university sport.

Paul McPate, Assistant Director of ISE, said 'The Coaching Forum recognises the significant efforts and impact of coaches working with Dundee University sports teams.

'It also provides an opportunity to share experiences, discuss best practice and celebrate the range and breadth of coaching work which is the foundation for the success of Dundee University athletes.'
