A VIP line up for Dundee Degree Show launch

Interview opportunities available in advance with graduate students

Photo opportunities with Lorraine Kelly & students on Thursday, May 20th

Television presenter Lorraine Kelly and former Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed will be amongst the VIP visitors to this year's Dundee Degree Show.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the exhibition, which will be open to the public from Saturday May 22nd to Sunday May 30th at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD), Perth Road, Dundee.

Before that, Lorraine, a former rector of Dundee University, will officially open proceedings during an invite-only Industry Night held at Dundee University Students Association (DUSA) on Thursday, May 20th.

She will declare the exhibition open following a catwalk show of new work from graduating students from the Interactive Media Design, Textile Design, Jewellery & Metal Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Product Design programmes. Prior to this, guests will be taken on tours of DJCAD to view the exhibits from more than 250 graduating student across 11 disciplines.

The following night (Friday, May 21st) will see artist and musician Martin Creed, winner of the 2001 Turner Prize, mark a Preview Night held for students, their families and friends, when his band perform live. The gig takes place in DUSA from 9.30pm and tickets will be available on the door.

Lorraine said she was delighted to be a part of the event and that she was sure that this year’s Dundee Degree Show would prove to be a great success.

'I am looking forward to seeing all the exhibits and the catwalk show,' she said. 'The level of creativity and skill at Duncan of Jordanstone has always been extremely high and I know this year will be no exception.'

The show takes place throughout the two buildings and fourteen floors that comprise DJCAD, with every spare space exhibiting art and design. Among the many highlights this year are:

Nick Cocozza's illustrative example of territorial behaviour displayed by tracksuit-clad alpha males.

Sarah Griffiths' exploration of how the power of tea can be harnessed to improve community spirit.

Kyle McKelvie’s alter ego ‘Edward Shallow’ releasing his second album and challenging belief systems through obsolete computer games.

Sara Aziz’s playful pen and ink reflections on the cultural difference between Scotland and her home country of Pakistan.

Profiles on these and other projects can be seen at: www.dundee.ac.uk/djcad/degreeshow/students.htm.

The Degree Show is one of the highlights in Dundee’s cultural calendar. Last year’s exhibits were viewed by nearly 11,000 visitors and the Show raised around £1.5million for the local economy.

The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday, May 22nd, until Sunday, May 30th. Admission is free and the exhibition is open from 10am until 8pm (Monday - Friday) and 10am to 4pm (Saturday - Sunday).

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has been rated as the top art school in Scotland and in the top four in the UK according to the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

DJCAD is at the forefront of the 'V&A at Dundee' project that will create a statement building on Dundee’s newly developing waterfront. This will house contemporary collections from the world-famous Victoria & Albert Museum alongside other major exhibitions, as well as showcasing design practice and research.

This £47million project is expected to create around 900 jobs locally, bring thousands of visitors to Dundee each year, and transform the city’s waterfront.
