Early ticket sales point to sell-out events

The organisers of the Dundee Literary Festival are preparing to put the 'sold out' signs up for several of this year’s events.

All tickets for musician and novelist Nick Cave’s appearance at the University of Dundee-organised Festival have already been snapped up, and healthy sales mean several other events are heading the same way.

Now in its fourth year, this year’s Festival is bigger than ever, and will see some of the most talked about names from the world of literature, journalism, philosophy and politics take part in a series of workshops, talks, book signings, and readings. The Festival takes place from Wednesday 23rd until Sunday 27th June, and will feature appearances from world renowned authors.

The first day will see the first Dundee Arts Café, a new series of events celebrating Arts and Humanties research in the city, take place as well as a party to launch the newest edition of New Writing Dundee. Entry to both events, which take place at the University’s Dalhousie Building, are free. Costa Prize winner Christopher Reid will discuss and read from his poetry at the latter.

Other highlights of the Festival include appearances from authors such as:

  • Iain Banks
  • Rosamunde Pilcher
  • Jackie Kay
  • Alan Warner
  • Lesley Glaister
  • John Carey
  • Richard Holloway
  • Michel Faber, Louise Welsh and Alasdair Gray
  • John Aberdein

'We are delighted with the response we’ve had so far,' said Festival Director Anna Day. 'There is a huge range of literary, music and other events taking place across the city as part of the Literary Festival and Graduation celebrations, and we are sure that visitors to Dundee will greatly enjoy them all.

'We aim to ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy at the Literary Festival, regardless of their age or taste. We are passionate about spreading the word and encouraging a growing number of people to engage with the wonderful and diverse world of literature.

'The message now to book lovers is to get your tickets reserved before it's too late.'

A writing school for anyone who has thought about becoming a writer will be held and local writers Neil Forsyth and Sue Peebles will be reading from their debut novels. Kenny Reid will be reading from his new book which deals with his golfing obsession while Stuart Kelly from Scotland on Sunday will be reading from his new book on Walter Scott.

A special event, held jointly with Dundee Contemporary Arts, will see author Allan Brown discuss his book examining the film, The Wicker Man and show previously unseen clips from the original film.

A series of events focussing on children’s books will also be held, with illustrator and writer Alison Murray visiting schools in the area to read from her book, Apple Pie ABC.

The fourth annual Dundee Comics Conference will take place on the final day of the Festival, with this year’s line up including star names from the world of animation including Dez Skinn, Rian Hughes and Pat Mills.

Tickets can be bought by calling 01382 384413, emailing literarydundee@gmail.com, from the sales booth at the Overgate Centre, and from DCA. More details about all the events taking place at the Festival can be found at www.literarydundee.co.uk/festival.htm, where tickets can be bought online.
